Curl yourself up in a big comfy chair this winter with a cup of tea and just the light from a reading lamp and the flickering of the open fire and read this.
The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories is all atmospheric chills of the old school. The title story might seem cliched to us in 2016 because it's been done so many times since but I doubt it's been done as well as this.
These stories probably won't leave you too scared to go to bed alone but they are choc full of atmosphere.

It is a collection of short stories. Like most short story collections, I liked some (example: The Wood of the Dead) and disliked others (example: Skeleton Lake).
