What a charming middle grade book! I picked this one up as a possible read aloud in the library with my students, but I think it is much better as a one on one read. Some aspects may be challenging for American children, as there are obvious cultural differences and there are times when it reads like a translated work. It lends itself to discussion, and would be a great read for any kid who loves stories about independent little girls, family, and friendship.

A previous low stakes cozy story of a bold little girl living a life of freedom in a Norwegian farming town in the mountains. Her best friend is her old godfather and pretty much everyone in town listens to what she has to say. Love that No parents are dead. Love different kind of families. Love the Heidi vibes of this story and the varied age friendships and true love. It was just cozy and lovely - plus who doesn’t want a seagull named Snorri that rides around on their helmet?

This was a lovely, old-fashioned tale. It made a great winter read-aloud with my girls.

We really enjoy her writing style and her books are so fun to read aloud. I think we liked this one better than Adventures with Waffles. Her books are very endearing and sweet.
