I did not enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed the first two in the series. I felt there was a wonderful plot, but the characters got a bit in the way. There were too many secondary players that never really felt necessary (outside of MacGuffin status). Ophelia seemed like a phoned-in villain that was far too easy to defeat and the "twist" with Orion felt forced.

I also didn't like that, even though there is a lot of work ahead of them, the story was neatly tied up without a lot of effort on the part of El. It just seemed too easy and fell into place too quickly. I appreciated there wasn't a big hoopla to get the other Enclaves to support her, but it felt like the elders of the enclaves were too willing to trust the kids who had just escaped the Scholomance instead of using their own thoughts and intuition.

while i was reading the first book and the second book, i kept getting glimpses of the type of emotions i felt while reading novik's 2015 novel uprooted, and i was chasing that feeling so much. i really craved it. i was worried that i wouldn't feel entirely fulfilled by this series. instead, the first and second book began to take on a much more nostalgic and beautiful feeling in my mind as i read this last one. it truly felt like every moment mentioned throughout the entire story began to matter deeply to me as i read the ending of the character's story arcs. everything that happened in this book was incredibly meaningful because it all mattered and it all made perfect sense. this would have probably been a perfect book if the narration had been more refined and some of the concepts hadn't been overexplained, and if novik hadn't tried to write a story from the perspective of a very british teenager as an american middle aged woman, because some of the words and slang used felt very forced, haha. but i didn't even mind it by the end! this story ended in such an insanely beautiful and moving way. it gave me literally everything i felt i wanted from these characters. i don't think i can say enough how wonderful it was to read this book. everything i do have to say is spoilers, so i won't say it here, because it's just so gratifying to read these books and watch the story unfold so lovingly firsthand!! power of love and friendship forever and ever. everything is always worth it. never give up. i love that we got two separate instances of the main character being bisexual. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really enjoyed the first two up until the ending of the second which was confusing and seemingly nonsensical. Glad I stuck with it, this was everything I loved about the earlier books and the book two ending was fixed in book three as well.

I love latter books of a series that cause you to have horrifying realisations about the earlier books, and this had them in spades.

What the hell, Novik did it again.

I was getting really frustrated with the first half of the book. At least three times, a character would say a couple of sentences and then El would explain a ton of inferred details to us for several pages. We had some important plot threads established, and pages were ticking by with no progress being made on them. El spent a lot of time not doing a damn thing, thinking for pages about how she didn't know what to do. There was a decent chunk spent on her wanting to accomplish something I thought was extremely stupid and didn't understand her motives - and then, at almost the 50% mark, the chess pieces were finally all on the board and the game began.

I kept saying to myself "there's no way she can solve [plot thread] in [pages left]" and then she DID over and over again until I had every answer I wanted. I actually want to go back and reread the prior two books knowing what I know now, because the reveals in this book were set up long before she started drafting it, there's just no way. It is a little bit of a spoiler to say this, so just skip over it, but watching El walk away from Omelas made me cry. In this present moment of multiple genocides and an ongoing, stubbornly-ignored pandemic, it hit me just right. "You got us all out for good, and they're trying to start a war over the bones. There's a better way. We know there's a better way. And you're trying to find it."

It's been a while since I read book 2 in the series and I contemplated re-reading before picking this volume up because when I initially tried to read it I was overwhelmed.  Book 2 leaves on a cliffhanger and book 3 starts right after and so you see the immediate events and it was a little difficult to jump right it.

I thought that the series was quite solid.  Book 3 really tied it all together and bits that were resolved were introduced in book 1 so it was quite good closure to see actions that have consequences and a resolution all together.

Some of the reveals were also top notch, since there's (in hindsight) a lot of foreshadowing but to be able to put it all together wasn't something I managed.  I don't know if it was because of the gap between the books and it would have been obvious if I read them in closer succession but I was satisfied with how it came together.

Me ha gustado, pero hubiese preferido un final distinto.
Hay veces que la muerte de un personaje importante encaja más que que se salve.
