Liked the depression, disliked the transphobia.

This book was GREAT! except it wasn't really for me,,, i think my main issue with it is that it's so real. I'm 17 and I've been struggling with depression for almost 3 years so I feel very understood from this book and its characters and I've caught myself dropping a tear or two whenever Craigs Family were just the cutest support system ever (wish i had that)

BUT, I really cannot be bothered with books written by men tbh,,, apart for the blatant romanticisation of mental illness and suicide,, the way the main character kept on having the most disrespectful, disgusting thoughts about girls just triggered me immensely,, not the mention the random ass men that kept on sexualizing the 15 year old Noelle..

This book was very moving. A great depiction of someone who struggles with deep set depression, I only give a 4.5 because
the sex scenes felt unnecessary in my eyes
But then again thats just personal bias. Over all an amazing book though! So easy to pick up and so hard to put down. It helped me get back into reading <3

Craig learns at his new school that he isn't as smart as the other students; he's merely average, and perhaps not even that. He quickly witnesses the demise of his formerly ideal future. When the tension becomes intolerable, Craig stops eating and sleeping, and one night, he comes dangerously close to committing himself.

Due to a suicidal episode, Craig is admitted to a psychiatric institution where he meets the self-elected President Armelio, a transgender sex addict, and a girl who has cut her own face with scissors. Craig is finally able to tackle the causes of his anxiousness there, away from the overwhelming expectations of school and friends.

Craig has been masterfully executed as a character. I connected with him a lot on a personality level. I'm afraid of change, any kind of change. EVERYTHING applies, including character, appearance, height, weight, place, friends, and mental stability. Reading this book made me feel more visible than ever before. Some might argue that craig is an irritating or unbearable character, but I truly adored him. I feel like my guardian angel actually delivered this book as a blessing for me. Am I prejudiced? probably.

I was cautious to pick this book at first. I mean, it could seem careless for a book to include a hilarious anecdote about despair. It's important to remember that depression is not something to be joked about or treated lightly. The portrayal of mental illness and how it was handled were both wonderful in this novel. The majority of books I've read on depression or mental health in general romanticized the condition, but this one dealt with everything so expertly and at just the correct speed.

Hmmm. This is a tough one for me to rate. The message as a whole was deeply impactful and true to life for my own experiences growing up with mental illness. However.....man.....this has a serious case of male writer syndrome and I was deeply uncomfortable by the trandphobia and sexualization of teenagers. I think if anything though that it's proof to me that I've grown out of YA and should seek out books on mental health that are nonfiction.

i found myself relating to how he felt at the end of the book. i was also in the psych unit of a hospital before and i completely understand how he felt
when he got out.
you can definitely tell this was written in the early 2000s based off of the terminology used.
