Magical realism can't mask white saviourhood and cultural appropriation. What were you doing, Allende?

A pleasing voyage into believable fantasy - a lot of daring do and narrow squeaks, full of plausible Yeti (if that's the plural of Yeti).

A charming, fantastical story about an expedition into the Amazonian rain forests, told from the perspective of 15-year-old Californian Alexander Cold. He is unexpectedly taken on the trip by his intrepid and formidable grandmother Kate, joining a group including a leading anthropologist, photographers and mercenaries. They encounter a tribe untouched by civilisation but Alex, with his new friend Nadia, end up seeing far more in the depths of the jungle. Aimed at young adults, City of the Beasts is lighter and more innocent than some of Isabel Allende’s other novels but it features some of her trademark magic and richness of imagination as well as highlighting the dangers to South America’s flora and fauna from capitalist exploitation.

This is really good uptill a certain point then it just becomes too descriptive and you lose sense of who the characters are through there metamorphosis.

Nice book, but didn’t particularly stick out to me. The message on the importance of protecting the environment and Indigenous people is valuable, but skews a little white savior-y, and the depiction of the Native people seems very stereotypical.

Can definitely tell it’s younger adult. The fact she used full names throughout really annoyed me. I would have liked some insight on the other group when they got split up. The mysticism got tedious near the end. BUT I did not see the twist ending.

Kind of hard to pick this one up, though that might be because I was still reeling from my last read. Fantasy with an important message about Amazonian tribes and forests, so check it out.
