I found this challenging to read through, many references lost on me that I had to infer from context or look up (which isn’t unusual in older stories and not a knock against it) and incredibly sad. While it’s ultimately an uplifting story, in a way, the societal reality behind it is dispiriting which I suppose is partially the point.

The first few pages reminded me... I well and truly love Dickens' style of writing. It is so full of descriptions, repeating for emphasis, wit and banter. I love it! This story didn't feel as classically crafted as his Christmas Carol. But the moral, characters and tale were charming, poignant and very relevant in modern times. If someone likes the Christmas Carol and hasn't ever gotten to this, I do think they would enjoy it a lot.

From the very first sentence I was reminded why dickens is my favourite author and the rest of the book only serves to strengthen that conviction. He has a mastery and command of the English language to rival that of Shakespeare, a true artiste
