Not bad

Interesting story and pleasing to see references to the first book (although it’s not essential to have read it). Quiet a few characters at the start but they gradually fade away to be left with the main ones. Easy to read and engaging. Nothing that you’ll be thinking about once finished but a decent storyline all the same.

Not too interesting to be honest.

Time shifts were indeed a bit hard to follow so I just ignored them. I was a bit annoyed by the unnecessary info in characters that gave nothing to the story (what school the went to, what car they drove, what way the walked). I guess it was meant to give them depths but it was just distracting. Same with the sexual implications - didn’t do much for the story and it felt like the author just wanted to write them.

Will not read any more from him.

I am really enjoying this series: great setting (Cornwall), engaging characters, and fantastic plotting. This book was written so that the narrative follows two alternating but parallel paths, one of the commission of the crime and the other the investigation. I didn't have any trouble following the story, but other readers might wish for a little different formatting to indicate changes in the time frame. Was happy to see cameo appearances by two major characters from the first book ... hope to see more of them as the series progresses.

When a naked body of man, seemingly tortured is discovered floating off the Cornish coast, the case is given to D.I. Morgan Davies and her team. But it is two days before the man is reported missing.
The story goes back and forward is time in telling the crime story, which is fine. But I did find Morgan Davies to be too obnoxious to make it a totally enjoyable read

3.5. Very entertaining. Good mystery. Solid police procedural. Charming characters and setting. Way better than I expected.

Three Star Rut

3 stars for me means that I enjoyed some of the book but that I was also disappointed by it. This is not a whodunit that keeps you in suspense until the final reveal. It's one of those that leads the reader to the culprit early on so that we can 'watch' the police reach the same conclusion. I prefer the former but I do enjoy the latter if the focus is more on the characters doing the investigation. For a Davis & West mystery there wasn't nearly enough Davis or West. Sadly, they were also the most well rounded characters. This would be rated 15 but I wanted an 18.
