1945. Otto giorni a maggio. Dalla morte di Hitler alla fine del Terzo Reich by Volker Ullrich

Very enlightening and informative with significant primary source material present throughout the book. I do, however, feel that there could have been more depth and historical analyzation behind it; there is the slightest impression that the author was supplementing and cementing his beliefs with the history relayed.

It can be hard to find books about WWII and Nazism that aren’t straight up ahistorical Nazi apologism, so I am incredibly thankful to have found this book. Ullrich provides an unflinching look at the last 8 days of the war in Europe, looking at leaders and soldiers and civilians. He does not absolve Nazis, their collaborators, and everyday Germans who outright or secretly supported Hitler’s regime. This is a must read for anyone interested in WWII.

A good blend of vignettes into more “everyday” Germans and those in power at the end of the Nazi regime. A few too many names to remember for the audiobook format but easy to look them up afterwards.

So much happens in this limited period of the Second World War and so little of it uplifting - reinforces a jaundiced view of the human condition. The horrendous death marches of concentration camp inmates ordered by their Nazi tormentors in a desperate attempt to hide their guilt, the frantic political scrambling for post War positions by those who until recently held absolute power, the darkly fascinating descriptions of the ends of Hitler and the cronies who surrounded him, the descriptions of whole cities laid waste and of their inhabitants scrabbling to survive, the depredations inflicted by the Red Army in retribution for the German invasion of Russia and much more - all are laid out in Ulrich’s page turning book. Really very good!

This was a fascinating book about the 8 days in Germany between Hitler’s suicide and the signing of the surrender agreements. I knew very little about this period and it was eye opening to read.
