Good morning, midnight was written in 1939 but reads like a contemporary novel. It deals with the struggles of a young english woman in Paris between the two wars. It’s dark, sad and devastating to read, but I couldn’t put it down. I could relate to a lot of emotions the main protagonist felt, her struggle to make it through each day, the feeling of loosing love and the loneliness afterwards.

Please, please, monsieur et madame, mister, missis and miss, I am trying so hard to be like you. I know I don’t succeed, but look how hard I try. […] every thought I think is weighted with heavy weights. Since I was born, hasn’t every word I’ve said, every thought I’ve thought, everything I’ve done, been tied up, weighted, chained?

I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes Sylvia Plaths or Virginia Woolfs work and wants to revisit the atmospheric Paris of the 1930s.
