I changed my mind, while still thinking I was right. 

almost stopped reading various times. kept reading after seeing a review that compares this to the book by hernan diaz that shares its name - saying both present different perspectives of one difficult story. 
thing is that we are with pietro for the longest time and i found him to be insufferable. then we change perspectives for the final chapters and get about no actual change in perspective, no reshaping of the (hi)story we just read. just some ‘he lies because he tells stories’.
