Most people read this in high school or college. I first read it only a few years ago. I liked it. Recently I realized I didn't remember much about it. Was it the life story of the Buddha? Or was it something else? So I picked it up again.
This time, I really appreciated the structure of the book, the parallels, the repetitions like symphonic music, the search for the self within the self. I had remembered the ferryman who carried Siddhartha across the river, but I had forgotten the role of the river itself. I had forgotten the son. I had forgotten Siddhartha's dear friend Govinda. I don't recall being in a hurry the first time I read this, but for whatever reason, it made a much stronger impression on me this time.
In fact, I think I'm going to reread it again, and soon.

I read this in my Asian Religions class as a college freshman. I remember really liking it and keep thinking I should re-read it.

How have I never heard of this book or the author? He won the Nobel Prize! I feel really stupid. This is a book to read again and again.

This book is wonderful and 5 stars but it in a quiet and gentle way. Herman’s writing reminds me of Orwell’s, it’s concise and smart. I recommend this to everyone. It’s inspired me to reread (Easwaran’s translation of) the Bhagavad Gita).
