is it bad to rate many things 5/5? perhaps. maybe though it's just indicative of reading good books: i feel like the bell curve of ratings should have a mean much closer to 5/5 than to 1/5. you should read books that intrigue you and your intrigue should lead to good books.

anyway, siddhartha was a nice read. it is about a man's path to enlightenment. it is short: i finished reading it within 24 hours of starting. i found the descriptions in some passages thought provoking and some imagery nice. it feels like a very straightforward book overall. true knowledge, wisdom perhaps, can only be found internally. this is the core idea. i did not find this idea revolutionary or particularly impactful in the way i have trouble getting strongly (emotionally?) impacted by any idea, but i do believe it's true. after all, is meditation not just looking inwards? the idea of wisdom coming from within can be seen at a smaller scale: tacit knowledge, often instrumental to the success of seasoned practitioners of something, can most often not be taught but is something that comes with thousands of hours of doing the thing. perhaps this is why it wasn't particularly impactful for me. but still, this is a concise and well written book that teaches a good idea. will certainly give it another read at some point later in my life. perhaps i will realize that there was more to the book than i had thought and get more out of it.

I loved this book, but I also wonder how much I am missing by learning a regurgitation of Buddhist philosophy from Hermann Hesse rather than an actual Buddhist. I’ve now read quite a bit about this being a German Idealist understanding of Buddhism and Hinduism, and it’s twice as fascinating to me that Siddhartha, while enjoyable to read - at least with a less than knowledge mind on the subject - is but a veneer for a westernized version of an eastern religion/philosophy. Even if reading Siddhartha did not give me an accurate understanding of Buddhism, it will have given me the foundational knowledge that the real thing is vastly different and far richer than that which is depicted. Great experience,

Engaging, easily imaginable novel has realistic characters and plot lines while delightfully mixing it with easily understandable Hindu beliefs and spiritualism. This novel makes you question what you believe and your life, and in my opinion, everyone should read this. I give it 5 stars.
