This is a very fun twist on a cookbook: personal narrative, detailed instructions and cultural context. I hope to read more nonfiction comics this year. Now I've just got to get all the ingredients to cook everything.

I read this book cover to cover within an hour of the UPS guy ringing my doorbell. It breaks down recipes so they are simple enough to understand, but with just the right amount of cultural background and bits of knowledge. And I can't say enough about Ha's illustrations. Reading it took me back to Seoul -- I could practically smell the soju and kimchi jjigae. This book has it all: killer comics, a great story, alluring recipes, and the science behind them. It will be referenced often.

Beautifully made, endearing art, excellent and simple recipes. Highly recommended introduction to both graphic novels and Korean food.

Ha starts us off with a succinct biography about how she taught herself to cook Korean food and a brief overview of the main tenets of Korean cooking before launching into the main primary part of the book, comprised of colorfully illustrated recipes. The writing and cooking descriptions are accessible and easy to follow, leaving the reader confident in their ability to cook Korean. The recipes are also adaptable to the palate of the cook and can be made vegetarian or vegan. Ha’s vibrant art and bold colors bring the recipes to life and bind the book together.

I felt like this was a rather good cookbook, I did not use any recipes from it (because I was not planning to cook around that time), but it seemed that the instructions were a little bit lacking (they seemed a bit simplistic). However, the food was presented in a welcoming way and it feels like it would be a great book for someone who is interested in cooking Korean food for the first time. But I did feel like it could have been just a cookbook without being a comic book, as it did not really add anything.
Overall, this is pretty good, but it felt like it would be better as just a cookbook.

Very cool. I've read a fair number of graphic novels/comics and cookbooks but nothing that's both. It's a great format and I hope more people combine the two formats, along with personal memoir.
