What a book, what a read! I loved the cast and plot of Priory, and though A Day of Fallen Night has a similar flavor, I enjoyed this read a touch more.

If you've read Priory already, you know how this story goes. But reading it in full is such a gripping adventure! The world and characters all feel better fleshed out, like Shannon is really settling into her groove. The pacing slows at times, but at others picks right back up and leaves you and the characters in the thick of it for pages.

It's a book that took a while to read and longer to digest, but I'm already craving to learn more about this world and those who live in and shape it.

For an 850+ page book to be this predictable is disappointing. I’m reminded of why I should run the opposite direction when an author announces a prequel.

samantha never fails to do incredible things with her prose and world-building. the book is deeply immersive and poignant in its writing. character development is a solid 10/10. esbar/tuva's and dumai's arcs were the most captivating for me and i truly enjoyed reading about the kingdoms of the far east and south. i did find myself struggling to keep up and unfortunately, i did feel the story dragged intermittently so i was not as engaged as i hoped to be. personally, TPotOT still takes the spotlight in the roots of chaos duology for me. that being said, this has to be one of my all-time favourite high fantasy series. i hope i can dive into this world again.
