I fun retelling of the nutcracker! A little toooo much sex vs actual plot for my taste

If a modern Anne Rice rewrote the nutcracker, this might be it. I somehow expected a LOT more Christmas and/or cozy. There is none of that. There were some scenes where I couldn’t decide if it was parody, but I’m afraid it’s written in earnest. The sex situations varied from very hot to laughable. I suppose there’s something for everyone? (Not really. While there is mention of sexual/identity diversity, the actual sex is cis-het). The middle lagged a little. The action at the end was great, but the “moral of the story” at the end felt heavy-handed and tacked on. This book was so close and going the right direction, but just didn’t quite stick the landing for me.

Rebecca's writing has always captivated me, and her retelling of The Nutcracker was a delightful surprise! Despite not typically reading holiday-themed books, I gave this one a chance and was not disappointed. I enjoyed the dual POV from each sister’s perspective, witnessing their growth and new strengths. The spicy scenes, especially the forest one, were thrilling and delicious. The characters were vividly brought to life, and the story's themes of overcoming obstacles, self-discovery, love matches, and humor made it a rewarding read!

Clara and Louisa are sweet and wicked girls.. or women should I say… I love Finias and his antics as the sugarplum fairy! Along with 5 stars, I have to give it 5 Chili’s for the spice! It’s mentally visual and exciting. I couldn’t put the book down for anything… a really great story

I wish I had heeded the reviews before starting this book. I've read fanfic with more depth than this book. I was really hoping for a true retelling of the story but it seems that the author was just using The Nutcracker as a way to deliver literary porn without any of the worldbuilding or character development. I have no personal qualms about that style or genre specifically, but I do think it is being deceptively marketed as something else.
