They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but “they” never talk about finding comfort in the cover. Second book in a row I’ve read during a personal tumultuous time whose cover brought me a sense of peace and joy. Did this influence whether I liked the novel or not? Perhaps, but I don’t subscribe to rules when it comes to finding goodness in things.

This was my first Allendale novel. Another author I should have known about and another political reign of oppression I should have known about.

Glad I came out from the rock under which I apparently live to read this lovely work and give kudos to this novel as I enjoyed it and learned new things. What more can you ask for?

It was a good story, but I felt it was missing something. The setting and history of Latin American country seemed legit but very vague as if she purposely wanted us to guess which country she writes about. I don’t feel like Allende was fully committed to telling us the whole story. It just feels like something is missing in the story of Violeta.
