I’ve been meaning to read Carmilla for so long and finally did once I saw there was a dramatised audio in the Audible plus catalogue.

The audio was FANTASTIC. Very well acted, with a wonderful cast and atmospheric sounds. A great production.

The story itself was eerie and full of sapphic yearning. I was so drawn into Laura and Carmilla’s story.

I can easily see how this influenced Dracula, and I only wish this was as fleshed out as Dracula because it is, in my opinion, a better story (though that’s probably my hatred of Van Helsing talking). I can also see the influence on Hungerstone by Kat Dunn, which IS more fleshed out and is a great book.

If you’re into lesbians and vampires, obviously I recommend this.

This was a lovely gothic tale, but I feel like I have nothing special to say about it… I think part of the problem is that I've read Dracula too many times, so I couldn't help comparing the two of them all the time - which is really not fair, because this was written some 25 years before the Stoker novel. The other problem was that I struggled with the English at times, all those neverending sentences with tons of old adjectives kind of dragged the book for me :(
