Listen! Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck from prose.

A delightful adaptation of a classic to a new medium. It translates Kurt-isms to comic books with love and care. Good stuff.

I thought this would be a good read on the classic. The story was a little confusing, but I'm glad that the graphic novel helped me visual it better.

An excellent adaptation of Vonnegut's classic novel. The story stuffers slightly without all the original prose, but the essentials are captured and brought to life in illustration. A strong addition to my Vonnegut library.

Haunting and sobering. The artwork matches the story perfectly with its flair for stylish, cartoony absurdity. It also manages to wring tremendous emotion out of big and small moments.

The writing is top notch. While the frame narrative ("this is a comic of a book by Kurt Vonnegut") is a bit uneven sometimes, all in all it lends a useful visual element to the idea of the aliens and how they experience the world.

Highly recommended.

One one hand, this alien/time travel/WWII story is totally absurd, and on the other, beautifully rendered, with compelling anti-war and nihilistic themes that are still relevant today.

Perfect form to adapt the novel! Stays true to the original and illustrations make all the time jumps easier to follow.

As an adaption, I'm not sure this really added anything to the story. The problem is that Vonnegut's work is already so surreal, and plays with narrative and time so adeptly, it's hard to see what could be added without changing the story or rendering it incomprehensible. In this edition then I would argue that the story is a play-by-play of the original text, just rendered in very manageable inking and paneling.

Some scenes disappointed me given that this was a graphic novel. For example if I was designing the tralfamadorian scenes I would have made the colors more saturated (as in [b:Barrier|41063221|Barrier|Brian K. Vaughan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1533631534l/41063221._SX50_.jpg|64134635]) or used a really minimal palette, maybe changed the inking-stye or removed inking altogether! Especially the scene where Billy 'reads' one of their books.
On the other hand the Trout sci-fi comic was a step in the right direction, but again I would have taken it further and shaken up the art-style a bit more.
I also found the paneling dull after a while. Where were the double-page spreads and the trippy sequences? Why was everything rendered so linearly?

My book group is reading this comic and I'm curious to hear what those who have never read this in novel form thought of the story. Could they follow it as it is here? Or maybe they share my preference for something more fantastical?
Anyway, if you've not read Vonnegut before I'd still recommend the written novel over this graphic edition. And if you have then I'm not sure you'll find anything new.
2.5 stars rounded up because it was serviceable.

One of the best panels in the book
