This is more good than not. Moore doing Moore things. But man, the issue focusing on tantric concepts just doesn't do it for me. Dislike.

Mercifully, it's a small piece of the overall story. Looking forward to the rest of the series! It's difficult to describe this kind of book (and most of Moore's work, honestly) without doing it a disservice.

Just give it a shot and read through if you like it. I think it's worth the time.

I cannot, I repeat, cannot recommend this book enough. It's absolutely gorgeous and mind-blowing, and my favorite Alan Moore comic, hands down.

"Promethea."
An imaginary fictional character who manifests in reality through the artists and writers that tell her story. Obviously, the name's a feminine version of Prometheus, which means "forethought"... which means "imagination". [...:]
Imagination... tumbling, spinning... is the light that guides humanity into its future."

Basically, this is the story of a college girl called Sophie Bangs who takes on the persona of Promethea and as a result of this has to deal with Promethea's enemies, friends and the end of the world.

(I'm just quoting my old review here, which I left for the final trade paperback here.)

This Absolute Edition collects the first twelve issues of the series, and it contains Sophie's first transformance into Promethea as well as her first mythical/mystical journey(s).

If you don't want to read this book for the story alone, for Sophie's incredible journey through the history of mysticism and magic and the *world*, you definitely have to read it simply because of J.H. Williams III's artwork. That man is a god. And in this edition, his work gets to shine even more (even though it smells funny).

Almost couldn't finish this one. The art is beautiful, I liked the idea of resurrecting an old comic character in all her iterations over the years, and the occult imagery was neat to look at. But I just couldn't take the book seriously knowing Alan Moore actually believes in the magical elements. I like Swamp Thing and Watchmen; I won't be reading the rest of Promethea.

The 12th issue with the rhyming caduceus snakes explaining Tarot was nearly unreadable. I should've followed my gut and quit reading during the earlier issue where Promethea is more or less coerced into having tantric sex with an old wizard (a stand in for Moore himself, no doubt) to learn about some stuff she apparently couldn't glean from books...or from a consensual sexual encounter?

The art was great (for the most part, not sure why they felt the need to whitewash Sophie but alas) and the story started strong but then it lost me with about 25% left. The misogyny and homophobia vibes didn't sit well with me, so I won't be reading the other two volumes.
