This read like a Scooby-Doo episode mixed with a Reddit horror story.
While the mushroom conceit has been done before,
this fast-paced mystery was still a lot of fun. The writing style was excellent, with a good balance of humour and  poignant reflections.

I wish this had been a full novel though, I felt like the characters could’ve been more fleshed out and the ending seemed rushed and unsatisfying.

But overall, this is a novella I’d recommend, especially to those who love:

  • medical gothics that give “things in jars” energy and are Frankenstein-esque
  • dark academia that looks at sketchy research practices, connections and impacts on human nature
  • reflections on sleep and insomnia

this was a very interesting read. but i agree with what ive seen a lot of people say, its far too short for the story within. it needed a lot more substance.
this was my 2nd read of october, and after my first read not ending up being horror, i was hoping this would satisfy that. but again, nothing scary. just a bit intense and weird and a tad too scientific for me. a lot of things left unsaid. it was very good and the writing is beautiful. but i think if i had read "if we were villains" first, which i havent yet, i wouldve been much more disappointed

Love Rio's writing but this was soo short! With five different characters it's hard to keep up on just over 100 pages. I am impressed that they still managed to stand out each in their own way. A nice spooky read.

Thanks to Macmillian Audio for the ARC!

As a fellow insomniac, I felt for those inside of Graveyard Shift. We travel through one eventful night in a small college town with a rag-tag group of town misfits. Each of these individuals has a few things in common, the one that brings them together on this fateful evening is their smoking habit. They go to the run-down, abandoned cemetery, as they always do and they find a 6 ft deep surprise.

From there I had a fun time reading more about their hour breakdowns through the night working on discovering why there was this potential gravesite and the dark twisted happenings within their community. They uncover more than they bargain for as they work together to understand what this means for others in their town and potentially beyond.

This novella had me on my toes from the first few minutes of listening. This is a gripping novella that didn't need much lead time for me to truly understand the suspense and creepy feelings I would experience while reading. A perfect read to add to your yearly fall or Halloween-themed reading adventures!
