Not bad so far. I'm hoping it gets better in books 2 and 3. Maybe I'm just bogged down getting to know the characters...

The illustrations are cool, but the story was [to me] weirdly disjointed. I was totally getting into the first part of the story on earth in Coon Bluff, Alaska, when all of the sudden the two main characters just spontaneously warped into outer space or some other planet-who-knows-where, and all of the sudden they were interacting with some crazy superheros.

Then it never again mentions anything that was going on in the first part, leaving me wondering, "What's going on with all those people in Alaska? What about that boy with the glasses? I want to know what happened to him."

Why introduce and develop characters if you're going to immediately completely drop them? Maybe they'll come back in future issues, but I like to see more continuity within a single story. I mean, it was kind of a long book, so they could have at least briefly revisited some of the initial characters.

Also? I liked Annihilis' fashion belt. It matched his outfit, which I thought was super cute.

The subsections of this collection are of mixed quality but the Annihilation: Nova section was so good that I’m overlooking the set-up. The Drax section was grim in tone and middling in quality. The Annihilation: Prologue gets the ball rolling for real but is a little hard to follow. Annihilation: Nova is the star of the show. Nova is a great character that I haven’t read before. I love his attitude, the series feels epic, important, throughout. The events feel significant even with little enough build-up. Great start to a famous event.

I wan't sure how this would play out as most the characters in this collection are B-list or worst but the writers Abnett & Lanning and Keith Giffen made them seem much more interesting. The threat is real and the drama and action is intense with a slice of humor thrown in as well. I look for the next book.

I think I only gave it the 4th star cause Richard Rider is hot.

And this is how this run of Cosmic Marvel began. since I started reading half way I already got spoiled with a few things, but it was still an enjoyable read.
When Abnett and Lanning took over it was perfection.
In my eyes, Giffen creates amazing plots, but his scenes and dialogues feel a little distant and hard to connect with.
Anyway. Amazing read. I can't believe it took me this long to find about it.

I remember seeing Nova as a kid and thinking he looked really cool. I may have traced him a time or two but I don't remember ever getting interested enough to read any of his comics. It's kind of funny the kid in this book (Cammi) makes fun of how "ridiculous" he looks. Cammi is by far my favorite character in the series. She's hilarious. One thing is that I always thought Nova's "helmet" was a hard metal thing but in this they make it like it's made out of something that's more like cloth.

Anyway, I thought Drax #1-4 (included in this graphic novel), was pretty lame, except for the snarky girl. I enjoyed the Nova comics much more. I like this level of cosmic destruction, it's scary and a whole different thing from Spider-man beating up some guys robbing a bank and confronting Doc Ock or even Super Man fighting some giant monster threatening a city. This is cosmic scale stuff.

Will probably check out volume 2 if I can find it at the library.
