Trigger Warning: SA

Rural Route 8 was my first E. Raye Turonek read. I was not disappointed.

We meet Jackson Pierce as he unexpectedly heads home from the war due to an injury.
To his surprise, he doesn’t receive a warm welcome. Faced with the reality that his wife has been unfaithful, Jackson loses his cool and ultimately finds himself discharged from his branch of service.

Life at war ensures that you witness much more than anyone ever should so it’s no surprise that Jackson is more than likely suffering from PTSD. In need of employment and desperate to reunite with his daughter, he begins medication to deal with the side effects of war and his volatile temper.

He lands a job as a mail carrier and juggling his mental health, co-workers, ex-wife, and temper becomes too much. He soon finds himself privy to the business of everyone he delivers mail to and uncovers a deep, dark secret his co-worker is hiding. Within a few days of the job, Jackson is pushed to the point of no return and everyone around him will pay.

Although I enjoyed this book, there were certain aspects I didn’t fully understand ie. ‘Buddy” so I may re-read it for more context.

From Hero to Psycho

We start out learning about Lance Corporal Pierce in his last days of his deployment. But the things that go on after his "retirement" rival his war time. You never know that goes on in the peoples' heads. And you for sure can't tell what anyone does when you're not around especially your co-workers.

We meet the postal carriers and clerks but also the mail recipients of Rural Route 8. And they're all crazy. The things these people have endured and actions they have taken will have your jaw dropping. AND talking to yourself, or the characters at least, I know I was.

A lot to unpack

This was a gripping and page turning tale. Multiple subplots along with the main plot. I'm ready to see what happens next!
