I always come across one or two words I don't see very often and look them up. She can describe a complex situation in a phrase or two - her description of aging comes to mind. Always a decent plot and good characters. Made me miss the south of England in December with the stark trees against the winter sky.

not PD James' fault but I was listening to it read by Michael Jayston and didn't like his voice (sorry Michael! and Sorry P D!)

I just enjoy reading her mysteries even tho I NEVER can correctly guess who done it. Sometimes, some things that are written gives me pause, like, this statement is so inappropriate. It reminds me that I've grown, and in a more empathetic place.

I still love her writing, but I continue to be disappointed by the payoffs to her mysteries.

P.D. James always spins a good yarn. It does seem like the last in the series, but I'm hoping that's not so.

Would've been four stars except that after the big climax, the ending got weirdly disjointed and ambiguous. I think that was on purpose, but deliberate ambiguity is not this particular reader's favorite thing ever. But James' writing is always strong and clean and appealing, so I enjoyed everything up through the climax a great deal.

Another Daliesh mystery. I typically love how James explains everything at the end, but this book left me still wondering. It seemed like an unspoken ending that we should all know was there, but I feel excluded from this knowledge. Still an enjoyable read. Kate and Benton were featured much less in this book, which is unfortunate. But overall still an interesting mystery.

Not one of the Dame's best, but as always an absorbing portrait of people who come together and the tragedy that results. The characters are interesting and it's nice to see some resolution for Dalgliesh, in case this ends up being the last one...
