This is a solid Batman origins that I genuinely enjoyed a lot. The art was amazing. That was the main thing for me, that the art in this comic book was amazing and not that the story wasn’t good either but I feel like the art definitely enhanced it. Overall I’d say it was a 4.4/5. Seeing this early nitty-gritty version of Batman was a lot of fun and I can see where a lot of inspiration for later iterations came from.

Thoughts: Loved the story and the narration . The fonts used for both Gordon and Wayne… a really excellent touch. Mazzucchelli art… again… incredible and I really loved the colour here. Anyhoo, this is a really excellent telling of the Batman origins. Wayne’s struggles… his naivety and anxieties in a few key scenes really in contrast to the weary and angry Wayne Miller illustrated in his Dark Knight Returns.

So yeah, a good caper to weave Wayne and Gordon’s lives together. Showing how similar they are. Their flaws and the thin line between them and those they go up against.

[Review written after the second time I read this:] All right, Miller gets to keep his four stars. But they're for Mazzuchelli as much as for him. Batman: Year One remains the Frank Miller comic I like best; he captures the beginning of Batman really well, and Mazzuchelli's art leaves you with a lot of images that stay in your mind. There's no way around this one if you're interested in Batman at all, and while it features some of Frank Miller less likeable trademarks (oh, the women!) they're not as bad as in others.

[Review written after the first time I read this: "While I love the ideas behind this one, and the artwork was good, I'm not much of a Frank Miller fan. I love the desperation and the darkness and the unfairness of the world that shines through here, and altogether I liked this one much better than The Dark Knight Returns, but there was something missing. At least Batman himself was more likeable here than in The Dark Knight Returns."]

First "superhero" comix I've been interested in reading, primarily because of Frank Miller and also because The Batman is different than all those spandex wearing vigilantes. Impressed with this beause event hough I had so many images and preconceptions of what Batman is supposed to act and be like, whether it be Adam West era or Christian Bale Hollywood reboot, this story transcends all of that and carves out it's own undeniable imprint of the Batman story. On top of that is the wonderful artwork from David Mazzucchelli whose tale at the end about Batman is a really great way to end the volume.

This was a great Batman origin story that is made better by the origin of Jim Gordon. There are no iconic villains here or zany characters. The bad guy is the city of Gotham and the corruption running rampant. While I liked the origins of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman, I thought Gordon's story was the star of the show.
