I don't typically read nor enjoy Scottish historicals, but I made an exception in this case and I'm glad I did. The setting is in the late 15th century (nice change) and there is a nice blend of historical intrigue to mix with the romance. The hero, James MacIntosh, is a highland chief who is a nice blend of warrior and gentleman, is tied to Aileana Chattan, the niece of a neighboring clan. Their romance is intense without being overbearing. Aileana was strong without being annoyingly "plucky", and the conflict between them - their forced marriage despite their mutual misgivings - was not overwrought. The setting is one the author clearly feels at home with, and her voice feels appropriate for the time.

This book reminded me of the older historicals that are becoming hard to find (though, importantly, without the old style "love scenes" that were more like forced sex) and I realize how much I miss medieval romances. There were some nice secondary characters that I hope become the focus of future books.

This is a great read from a debut author, and I'll be looking forward to more of her offerings!

Kate Robbins brings Medieval Scotland to life in the first of The Highland Chiefs Series. Book one has some very spot on descriptive historical content in not only setting, but in clothing as well. The story is as old as the cloth it is cut from. A rugged Scottish nobleman who's commitment to tradition sets him against his own progress. The romantic adventure is a good read. The book covers are amazing. Looking forward to reading the remaining books in this series.
