The Halloween Store and Other Tales of All Hallows’ Eve by Ronald Kelly is a collection of 8 horror. short stories. Typically when there is a compilation of short stories, there are usually a few duds mixed into the collection. Surprisingly, all of these stories were a solid 3 or 4 star rating with an overall rating of 3.25. My favorite stories were Mister Mack Is Back in Town and Clown Treats. This was a fun collection of short stories perfect for the spooky season. None of these stories would be classified as scary. . . mostly along the lines of coming of age “horror.” It was less than a 90 minute read, but I enjoyed this quick book of bite sized tales.

Loved it. It's pretty much the film version of Halloween anthology movies like Trick R Treat or The Mortuary Collection. There isn't an overarching storyline to tie everything together, which made me sad, but it's still a glorious little collection of gleefully fun horror of the "Don Post mask" era, and if you know what that reference means, you'll probably enjoy this. Kids send off for a comicbook monster with startling results. A smalltown sheriff is out of his league against a Jack-O-Lantern-obsessed serial killer. Kids buy some great new masks at the mystery Halloween store and chaos ensues. That sort of thing. It's not gruesome or downbeat or depressing, it's very "EC Comics" in its style and even includes a few personal essays by the author about his own experiences of Halloween in the 1970's.
Thumbs up, an ideal October read.
