arc from my bookstore
(quitting my job and joining up on a deep sea cable repair vessel if anyone needs me)
A really fascinating read. Super interesting subject matter with a meta twist, where the narrator is a journalist, leading him to actively reflect on the act of writing about the same things we're currently reading. He's a flawed protagonist, weirdly obsessive but also has a good instinct. The last third of this book had me completely enraptured - I couldn't tear my eyes off the page. At times too slow or a little heavy on the messaging, but I really enjoyed this nonetheless.

4 stars!
This read was well outside of my comfort zone, but I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would! On the surface, it seems pretty straightforward - a journalist seeking to write an article about the ships that go out to repair internet lines deep within the sea. But once you get into the meat of it, you realize there is a lot more than meets the eye and that the real story here is not the repairs at all, but the people behind them and the things they risk for us to continue to be connected to the world. I especially loved the way the author wrote this, where it felt very emotion heavy and thought-provoking. The main character is simultaneously incredibly familiar right off the bat but still mysterious, and the storytelling he uses to carry out the story was hypnotic. There were some dull moments and some pieces that didn't quite fit towards the end, but the ride was thoroughly enjoyable and a great start to the year!
