Agatha Christie designed the modern mystery- many of the tropes we see in the genre today are inspired by her works. Based on these tropes, I enjoy predicting the ending of Hercule Poirot novels as he himself is solving the mystery. I was about 50% right on this one. 
The plot is easy to follow and the dialogue enjoyable and lighthearted, save for several outdated notions regarding nationality and gender. Discussions of class or occupation are to be expected in a story from the 1930s, but a reader who will do more than roll their eyes at other prejudiced comments is not likely to enjoy this story. 
Nothing will Murder on the Orient Express for me, that was one of the first non-YA novels to really grab my attention and fully immerse me. But this story is innovative and modern for its time. I especially enjoyed the frequent character interactions and side plots, as opposed to Poirot making ceaseless investigations while being followed around by some wide-eyed admirer. Regardless, I enjoy his arrogance in this one; Poirot was given a very human depth amidst his usual suspicious meddling. 

 Kasus pembunuhan dimana pelakunya sebenarnya cukup mujur karena kalau saja seandainya Poirot waktu di pesawat Promotheus yaitu tempat terjadinya pembunuhan itu ga mabuk udara dan tidur, pasti bakal ketahuan. TAPI, bahkan meski sempat tidur pun, dengan kemampuan deduksi dan '"sel - sel kelabunya", Poirot berhasil menebak si pelaku dengan tepat. Bahkan masih sempat-sempatnya "ngadalin" pelakunya 🤣. Misteri kenapa ada lebah di pesawat (apakah buku ini yg menginspirasi filmnya Samuel L. Jackson yang Snake on a Plane?) terjawab sudah.

Death in the Clouds atau Maut di Udara ini bagian dari series Poirot tapi penceritaannya dari sudut pandang orang ketiga serba tahu. Kali ini tokoh selain Poirot yang hadir adalah Inspektur Japp, walau gue lupa apa dia pernah ada di buku tertentu dan ternyata dia ada di The ABC Murders. Maklum saat baca buku itu gue ingetnya Hastings doang, hehe. Walau kasusnya sendiri terjadi di ruang terbatas dan uniknya lagi, di pesawat, kali ini Poirot tidak memecahkan kasus di kejadian perkara. Ada persidangan yang menyelidiki kasus pembunuhan Madame Giselle dan kasusnya menjadi sensasional, mengubah nasib beberapa penumpang yang juga masuk list tersangka pembunuh Madame Giselle. 

Dari buku ini aja, Dame Christie sudah menantang pembaca. Hayoloh, gimana caranya ngebunuh Madame Giselle tanpa ketahuan semua penumpang di kabin? Ada 11 orang (termasuk Madame Giselle) di kabin itu dimana posisi Madame Giselle ada di pojok paling belakang. Siapapun yang membunuh Madame, minimal setidaknya ketahuan. Apalagi ada dugaan Madame dibunuh dengan jarum beracun yang ditiup dari seruling. Bahkan sampai ada percobaannya segala! Dari sini juga Poirot berkata pada Fournier, polisi Prancis yang juga menyelidiki kasus pembunuhan, bahwa jangan cuma mengandalkan mata saja alias penyelidikan visual, tapi juga "mata otak". Dengan petunjuk - petunjuk itulah, Poirot akhirnya berhasil mendeduksi siapa pelakunya. Suatu deduksi yang menurut gue cukup briliant dan agak sedikit ngetwist, karena ya lagi-lagi gue ga kepikiran kalau ternyata howdunnitnya begitu! Mungkin agak lebih bisa dipraktekkan daripada howdunnit di Death on the Nile, apalagi kalau melihat bagian dalam pesawat Prometheus yang cukup gede itu. Jangan dibandingkan sama pesawat komersil lah ya.

Salah satu fakta yang unik dari buku ini, selain jarum beracun dengan racun dari bisa ular dll, adalah bagian dimana Dame Christie "balas dendam" ke suaminya saat itu yaitu Max Mallowan dengan menulis bagian dimana ada seorang suami yang meninggalkan istrinya yang lagi sakit di sebuah hotel di Suriah (atau Syria) hanya untuk mengejar kepentingannya di Irak. Bisa jadi kejadian ini sangat berbekas juga buat Dame Christie sampai dimasukkan ke dalam buku, lol. Bagian itu ga ada hubungannya sama kasus pembunuhan karena semacam intermezzo saja, tapi tetap menggelitik dibacanya. Kayak emang jangan main - main sama penulis, bisa jadi antara kamu dimatikan di bukunya atau malah diejek ga karuan :P.

Death in the Clouds menjadi salah satu buku dengan kasus misteri yang cara pembunuhannya cukup unik. Tentu saja twistnya pun cukup lumayan dan sejatinya agak memuaskan juga pas tahu pelakunya ternyata sempat dikerjai oleh Poirot tanpa si pelaku sadar. Khas Poirot juga, selalu ada yang akhirnya jadian di ending cerita. Mungkin kalau Poirot bosan jadi detektif, ada baiknya karir sebagai mak comblang perlu dipertimbangkan. 

Okay, I get that this isn't a GREAT Christie mystery. The sleuthing detours felt haphazard and the ending became very convoluted. Still, I had a fun time consuming it! I've been in a reading rut lately, and this revitalized my interest in audiobooks, and Christie in particular.

What stood out to be about this story: low stakes, excellent cartoonish characters* (much more fun than the usual brooding suspects!), mediocre pacing, a bizarre act three murder and a conclusion so nonsensical that I accepted it because I couldn't keep track of all the convoluted clues and unlikely solutions!

*deadpan flute-obsessed doctor having some kind of affair; zany mystery writer obsessed with the murder weapon; indistinguashable father/son acheology nerd duo turned arranged employer/love interest?; cartoonishly villainous dentist with bipolar behavior who provides internal monologues (!) on multiple occasions; coke obsessed chorus girl turned duchess, and the random horse girl who wants her husband; TWO lost daughters who kind of matter but mostly don’t, plus the bored hairdresser main character you assume is one of those two but is actually a nobody, lol… and a little Belgian detective investigating the case with the police despite his CLEAR conflict of interest as a possible (even likely) suspect! A ridiculous, if occasionally tedious, DELIGHT, I tell you!

Serious side note, though: the version I listened to seemed to censor at least one very extreme instance of racism (and fatphobia!) that occurs as a bonding moment between two main characters. I learned about it later while reading a Goodreads review and was genuinely SHOCKED at its casual, intentional, and blatant awfulness. That lowers the score quite a bit for me and leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the fun and frivolous aspects of the story that I enjoyed.

Interesting book. I find it amazing how her work is timeless. There’s a scene where Jane gets so annoyed at someone she almost throws the hairdryer at them, which is something that relates to modern day. I was thinking how great this book was until it got racist. The twist was unexpected - I had about 4 theories and none of them came true. It was a seemingly insignificant detail that is the crux of the twist. It was enjoyable to read. Surprisingly I liked reading about all the characters backstory’s, but this made it more slow paced.
