Dollycas's Thoughts

In this novella, Mac desperately needs Millie's help and his brother Vince's too when he is pegged as the prime suspect in the murder of a passenger aboard the Geneva Express. Will they be able to outrun the authorities and prove Mac's innocence or will Mac go down for a murder he didn't commit?
_____
This was my first time meeting Mac and Millie and they are quite a pair. Mac is a retired cop trying to finish writing a book. Millie is a strong, independent woman with magical abilities and is totally in love with Mac. Missing previous books in this series, I thought I might have a hard time getting invested in these characters, but that was not the case at all. I was immediately drawn into their story and surprised by what others have known since the end of book 1, The Christmas Walk Caper. The characters were well-developed and their dialogues were true to life.

The murder mystery was intense and due to the short novella length there wasn't a lot of time to catch your breath. Mac and Millie were on the run and I felt like I was right there with them. Determining who committed murder on the Geneva Express was complicated. The showdown was powerful, dangerous, and emotional. I was balancing on the edge of my seat as everything played out. Means and motive were a bit of a bombshell. I really enjoyed the paranormal elements at the end and throughout the story.

My only drawback to the story was the explicit language it contained. While I enjoy reading all types of mystery, cozy, traditional, suspense, and thriller, I feel that offensive language takes it out of the cozy realm. To replace that type of language and keep things "cozy" authors may have to get creative.  I know those words are used more in the world every day, but I have always felt that a cozy mystery is a book I could give to my mother or grandmother, and they could enjoy it without the shock of blue language.

Murder on the Geneva Express is a well-plotted, well-written mystery with intriguing characters and a compelling mystery. The ending was fun. I am interested in reading more stories featuring Mac and Millie. I may have to go back and read the previous books to get to know them from the start.
