Typically not my style of a "horror" or "thriller" book, but still the author brought out a unique, attention grabbing concept. Enjoyed the range of characters and different POVs.

This book does set the bar for modern horror in the late 60's-early 70's. Different scenes are told from multiple characters' perspectives, the amount of dead is always present in this book, but it knows when it's appropriate to add the right type if humor. Some say that it's too slow, but I don't think so. In fact, it creates tension and suspense as we know each character. So if you want something that takes awhile and sets a new standard for the genre, then check out.

I was thoroughly enjoying this right up to the point where we heard the Chowder Society tell the story about what happened with Eva Galli. Seriously? Five guys murder a woman because she was coming on a bit strong sexually? Sure, it’s okay in retrospect because she’s some evil shapeshifting demon, but for 50 years these guys thought they just killed some saucy slut in self defense. Enough with the misogyny already! When I read that I looked back on all the portrayals of women in this book, and realized that every single one of them is a cold-hearted, vain, cheating c%#t. And then a bunch of white guys (including the clever heroic horror writer... hmmm, could this be Peter Straub?) team up to save the day! Yay! Actually, I couldn’t even finish this, I’m just guessing that’s what happened.

I don't think this is the scariest book ever but I think it is the most detailed ghost story. I felt I was in a huge chess game. Whereas in chess one knows the method and ultimate goal, in this story the method and goal is...is...is....

I've waisted so much time trying to finish this book and now here I am soggy and disappointed. Bunch of boring old men do a big time oopsy and now they are being haunted errr...hunted. I kept hearing great things about how eery and hauntingly good this book is but it definitely failed on both of those ends for me :c
