This was the December book for the Sapphic Book Club.
This was a fun and enjoyable YA supernatural book. This book follows Micheala, a recent emancipated 17 year old, who momentarily died but is living her best life in Montana. The book starts off as a classic new girl in high school, John Hughes style, but then it quickly turns in Supernatural or Buffy, when two monster hunting siblings enter her life.
Michaela is "ruthlessly" optimistic and the poster child of mindfulness and forgiveness. Handman somehow keeps Michaela super optimistic and trusting, while also being grounded and not naive. Michaela's optimimism is infectious and gives some food for thought, she is also very sassy. If you were to combine someone who is so positive you question if it can possibly be natural with the internal dialog and quips of Gideon the Ninth, you would have Michaela.
The other characters were nice additions but I would've liked to spend more time with them. The book had a good conclusion with plenty of unrolsved items without it being too cliffhangery. Here's to more books!!!
I really enjoyed the book and it's take on the supernatural elements and I look forward to sequels (please be sequels). I would recommend this to YA supernatural fans.

This is a cute social romp. No, it's a monster story! No, it's queer YA fic! Well, whatever it is, it's witty and light but also prepared to go to some heavy places. Wren Handman turns out another sparky darkly sparkly spec fic quick trip.

I'm so pleased with how this book turned out! I set out to write something that was funny, light, entertaining, and queer, and I think Havoc & Happiness ticks all of those boxes. If you want a distraction from the doom and gloom of the world, pick this up.
