I've never read this before. I've only ever seen the movie. This story is simultaneously delightful and infuriating. It's delightful in seeing how much Matilda learns and devours books. It's infuriating in how poorly so many adults treat her and the other kids. The lack of care Matilda's parents have for her makes me so mad and I am enraged over how Trunchbull is even allowed to be anywhere NEAR children. The way she physically treats the children and verbally abuses them is downright appalling and she should be thrown in jail for life. I know it's just a fictional story, it's written for children, and I should pay attention to the happy parts but I can't help it.
Roald Dahl seems to have a knack for writing some truly heinous adults and putting children in sad/grave conditions. I do wish I had read this as a kid because I know I would have loved it even then.

Me gusta mucho esta historia, tanto el libro como la película. La primera vez que leí este libro fue para el colegio, ahora lo hice nuevamente y sigo pensando que es uno muy entretenido y ligero:)

I have read this book several times and just love it. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, and frankly, any Rould Dahl book is a must read. Love, love, love this book.

Read this to the kids. They give it 5 stars "because she moved" -Jesse and "because she went to live with Ms Honey and also Ms Trunchbull is gone!" - Jane.
I enjoyed this book, but the cruelty is a bit over the top. A common Roald Dahl theme.

I enjoyed this short book. It was hard not to compare it to the movie, which was more focused on Matilda developing her powers and which included more scenes than were in the book. Matilda never goes to the Trunchbull's house, for example. I felt like the book moved too quickly toward the end, but that could also be because I expected more from the movie to happen. Regardless, Matilda is such an endearing character to whom I slightly relate. I like how much more savvy she is depicted in the book ; the Trunchbull is simply another bully Matilda takes down. (The Trunchbull is horrible, I know, but she's pretty hilarious in the book). The illustrations accompany the story well and make the book a do-able read for reluctant readers. This is an enduring and fun classic I would recommend as a read-aloud, especially for a third-grade class.
