Even with all the negative I found with this book it was better than Shamans Crossing. Nevare didn't whine quite as much and I got to meet 2 more interesting characters that I actually liked (his "love" interest, Amzil, and a scout, Buel Hitch). By the end he is finally forced to make a decision about his own life instead of constantly living his live as the Good God or his father want him to. Of course it could be said he still didn't make the choice and that the "magic" made it for him.

This book is terrible. It is by far the worst Robin Hobb novel i have read, and amongst the worst fantasy. I like the first book, but was extremely disappointed in this book, so much so that i gave up on it about 2/3 of the way through. THIS IS A TERRIBLE NOVEL.

I tried. I was warned about the intense fatphobia but it was still too much for me

There is a movie I watched once. I can't remember the name. But at one point the son starts watching videos of a larger woman who webcams herself cooking and eating for others. It is a fetish.
If you have this fetish you will probably enjoy this book. If not.... you may like it you may not.
For me it was too slow and the action at the end was just too little too late. I mean how long can this protagonist remain utterly clueless? Apparently for 700 pages.
I'm a little sad. I love Robin Hobb. But this book was a disappointment.

Featuring easily the most painful start to any of Hobb's books I've read, I very nearly quit Forest Mage 20% in. The plot of this one is that Nevare gets fat through no fault of his own and everyone is a total dick to him. Once he breaks free of his estate it gets a little better, but there's a lot of just hanging around a graveyard waiting for things to happen and feeling sorry for himself. Bumped up to three because the last 60% is much better than the first 30, and Hobb has set up for a finale that could possibly be entertaining.
Based on the first two books, though, I recommend the Soldier's Son series to no one.

Not as good as the assassin series. I felt this book dragged a bit... Still good fantasy and Forest magic had some power to it.

I'd only recommend this book--and this trilogy--to people who already really like Robin Hobb. It's definitely a testament to her gifts as a writer that she can pull off this story at all. This follow up to Shaman's Crossing is really, really dark, considerably darker even than that book. The world-building is competent but not very interesting in this book, and the single point of view is wearing. More than BHobb's other protagonists, this one often seems to be buffeted by stronger forces around him rather than someone driving events; also like many of her characters, he makes misguided decisions that can be frustrating to the reader even as it humanizes the character. I like Hobb enough to see this through but this is not as much fun as the Farseer books.
Oh, it also doesn't help that the reader on the audio book isn't very good and often misplaces the emphasis on words.

If the fatphobia was rough in the first book, it was even worse in this book. This was a difficult book to read for the rampant cruelty and injustice, but it was just as hard to put down. Just know if you choose to pick up this trilogy that it's got a lot of difficult subject matter. It also has interesting, complex characters, a fascinating magic system, and great writing. I've read that this is often people's least favorite Hobb trilogy and as it's the only one I've read any of it makes me excited to read her more popular works.
