illustrated, tattered travelogue of some boozy-woozy roadtrips these bohemian dudes took around the south in the 1980s, seeking rural weirdos who made weirdo art, in what you might call the last moments of the possibility of being a true weirdo and not knowing it.
the weirdo art is exquisite, and the travelogue has some moments. although also it kind of feels like a bunch of mumbled in-jokes too. Some of it feels like the michel butor book Mobile (probably because it's also the product of art-boi wanderlust). anyway this is overall cool and good and i dig institute 193's project as of ... learning about it last week.
there's a certain leering vibe that materializes when artsy people talk about "outsider" or "naive" or whatever art. this book occasionally approaches the rear bumper of that vibe.
if you are into southern weirdos this is worth examining, if for nothing else than to find names to google. the back roads of the internet if you will (you won't!)
