Fun read! Gruesome at times but that is the reality of elephant poaching. Recommend as a quick eco-thriller read and might check out some of the authors other books.

This novel is a really unique and interesting reflection on identity and memory. The main plot focuses on the plight of a herd of resurrected mammoths, but it is far more about what makes us who we are and how our memories shape both our understanding of the world and of ourselves. There’s a delightful little twist towards the end of the book that speaks to this idea that our experiences shape our behavior, regardless of whether we know it or not.

One of the things I think Nayler does well in this book is show parallels with human and genetic memory. Are the mammoths true mammoths? Are the characters truly themselves when in different bodies, different environments? How do circumstance and experience impact the values a being has, regardless of its time or place?

I honestly wish I could teach a class about this book. It’s that thought provoking.

I only rated it a 4 because there are some jumps in the narrative that were tough to keep up with at first. I appreciate how short this book was but I think Nayler had a lot more space to play in.

I love how the sci-fi is so cool, but takes a back seat to the story that Nayler wants to tell, and the themes that he wants us to think about.

Focused on memory, justice, and community, The Tusks of Extinction does a lot in a very small space! Nayler weaves together some very familiar ideas for an unfamiliar story that is incredibly moving.

Perhaps my favourite thing about the novella is how quickly Naylor drops you into a very complex setting, with seemingly so little effort that obscures how difficult such an effective immersion is. Naylor also does an incredible job weaving together familiar ideas into an unfamiliar story in very moving ways.

A warning that it can be violent, though not needlessly. Acts of violence and the place of anger in protection and retaliation is a central theme.

Surprisingly enjoyable read. Less than a hundred pages, could easily be read in a single sitting. Loved the prose from Nayler. I think if he wanted to stretch it out, he could have. Not a lot of world building, which I don't always personally care for anyway. Dr. Damira is THAT bitch.
