The rating has nothing to do with the book or the writing and has everything to do with my inability to understand it while reading. I struggled, but that doesn't mean this book is not good. Toni Morrison was a Nobel prize laureate for a reason.

Absolutely exceptional book! Toni Morrison writes so exquisitely, even though I’m not normally a fan of magical realism and the time jumping can be a little confusing I was totally engrossed in this book. I am ashamed to say this may have been the first novel I’ve read on the main subject of slavery. This book will stay with me for a long time. See trigger warnings as there’s so much dark stuff

ouch. was really excited for this one, even if worries regarding my disinterest for slavery stories never left me. should have listened to the worries, they know better. i don't think my issue with this kind of subject matter lies per se in the "borderline traumaporn" slavery subject itself but more so in the double violence and dehumanization black women are subjected to, having both black and female bodies, even worse when it comes from black men themselves. p10-ish to 13-ish gave me just that, and i've rarely felt as disgusted.

This book was beautifully written and narrated by the author. The story was brutal and difficult and that was part of the beauty, especially following the story arc of the character called Denver. There were many lovable characters, hate-able as well.  The magical realism was masterfully written. I will most likely have to read this with my own eyes in order to grasp a few of the more esoteric scenes.

Beautiful, powerful, haunting.  Not an easy read but worthwhile.

This is an amazingly written book that required adaption to the screen. No one ever told me Toni Morrison writes horror!! This book was amazing. One of those books you can re read repeatedly and always find something new. Hella recommend.
