(Audio book)
Solomon's Oak is about a widow who is just trying to get by running the farm where she had lived with her husband, fostering boys, dogs and keeping horses. It's been a year since he died and she is hosting her first wedding as a fledgling business to supplement her part-time and inconsistent job at Target, when the case worker who worked with her family in the past begs her to take a girl for the night (it's Thanksgiving,) or a couple of days until she can find a placement. An ex-cop photographer stumbles on a sword fight reenactment (part of the themed pirate wedding,) and thinks it's real. These are the three main relationships in the book- the widow, the foster daughter and the photographer, but all the characters are very real and fleshed out.
As a former foster parent, the emotional realities and the struggles were very authentic.
This was an "available now" audio stumble-upon- a browsing find that I'm glad I found. Also has a sequel that held its own.
