I could definitely relate to Virginia feeling like an outsider. Great read.

My first time reading the updated edition!
This book is SO angsty. You definitely want to find out what will happen to Virginia next… the message felt very heavy-handed, but that’s common for YA. It wasn’t as impactful reading it as an adult as it was when I was 12-13, but I still enjoyed it!

a great story about loving yourself just the way you are. I didn't love all the sex references though.

I LOVED this book. I felt like I was reading a book about myself in high school, especially how Virginia felt about guys and relationships. (Disclaimer: I was the chubby friend in high school; and like Virginia I was preoccupied by that). I think what I liked most about this book is that, while there was a satisfying ending, everything wasn’t ‘fixed’ at the end. Virginia does stand up for herself by telling her dad to stop talking about her weight, but her mother and her still don’t agree on most things, especially her size. This rings true to life - people don’t magically stop doing hurtful things, and people like Virginia’s mom will always make the comments that she made. The growth in the book is how Virginia reacts to it. This was an amazing book that shows a girl learning to stand up for herself, realizing her family’s not perfect and discovering her voice. I found this book on the ALA frequently challenged book, which makes me sad - the sex scenes were few and not gratuitous and the few curse words should not keep a girl struggling with her identity and self-esteem from discovering this empowering book.

Fun, easy to read. The story line bounces a little bit but it's sooo relatable to the teen years!

If you often feel outside the "in" group, this book is for you. A girl wrestles with her weight and more importantly, her body image. Some of the pressure is self-imposed and some comes from her parents. Soon she realizes even so-called perfect people are flawed and can even topple off their pedestals. This story excels at showing us how to become healthy by standing up for ourselves and hiding no more.

I enjoyed this book although it didn't knock me off my feet. Virginia is definitely the "doormat" in her family and when she finally decides to take control you can't help but smile and say "You go Girl!"
