I do like to imagine there’s somebody out there that talks about Myrna loy as much as I do

John Fante's novel about an odd, quirky, lost as hell wannabe writer who comes from Colorado to LA is a must read for anyone interested in Los Angeles. It's honest, funny, insightful, brutal, and works on many layers. Filled with old school descriptions of a Los Angeles from the 1930s, the book is both a piece of nostalgic fiction and almost like a critical analysis of the era and the people of it. It's a fantastic read and one of my favorite books in my little library.

I liked this book better than books two and three in the series. The pacing seemed better; it didn't drag on so much it made me fall asleep like the previous volumes. Despite being better than earlier entries in the series, it still wasn't as good as the first book.
