Tolkien and his work seemed incidental to the arguments the author was making.
Quite bleak and depressing - no solutions (even suggested ones).

No time for a full review, but essentially this was interesting enough, but the author presented a view that was clearly his own without, on many occaisions, backing it up with evidence from the texts. A little too anti-science.

Within its limits, good and sound analysis. But in this day and age you can't preface a book about Tolkien by saying you'll focus on the two published while he was alive; Tolkien Studies have evolved since then, with the publication of his unfinished works.
