This is a strange novel. It's definitely not a thriller and is walking on a tight rope between mystery and litfit, occasionally leaning more towards one side than the other. As a dual mystery, it's fine. As litfit it's really preoccupied with sexism and the way women's roles changed from the 60's to the 70's, with some musing about if people needed to suffer hardship in order to reach their true potential. I didn't feel like the last chapter was necessary, personally.

My mom read this and truly enjoyed it. My cousin saw her post about it and asked to borrow it for her book club since the library holds on it were months out. I then proceeded to read said 478 page book in one sitting so I didn't have to wait till my cousin returned it 😆

Needless to say, this was a good one. All three of us thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience. Lots of complex characters and the story kept you guessing. I really tried to predict what was going on but didn't have much luck.

It is told in multiple povs and has a nonlinear timeline, so this might be a bit confusing on audiobook. I did catch myself checking the year on some of the chapters.

Really flushed out and believable characters. Switched POVs and found myself routing for everyone (expect you-know-who).
Was very disappointed at the end. Wow, the real killer was a young boy's devotion to his mentally ill mother? Ground breaking. Idk, it's obviously tragic and unfortunately does happen, but to have Alice so mistreated by her family and then in some ways fulfill their expectations of her by being "bad" for Bear was just very unsatisfying to me, personally.

Let me preface this by saying that I just don’t think thrillers are for me. I didn’t dislike the writing - however, I felt like it would have been more impactful to have just one character perspective. The different perspectives helped uncover more information BUT they all felt really similar.

Also the Sluither storyline felt contrived to me. I keep trying to understand how he added to the story in a meaningful way… Let me explain:

1. He saw where Bear was buried. So did T.J., and as a story centered around women, I think being in her brain as she decided to ‘betray’ her ailing father and lead them to Bear’s burial spot would be more interesting.
2. He *maybe* led Tracy out of the wood. Again, would have been more interesting if it was Stoddard’s wife. The Scary Mary reveal was meh.
3. He was a convenient way for Judyta to show that she’s a *real* investigator to the guys. Eh, Denny always believed in her, and I would have preferred to see that mentor/mentee relationship explored more.

Anyway, the writing is decent and the atmosphere is fun for a summer read. Just not my cup of tea.
