This book had me in a chokehold however I found the first third of it to be a tad slow. Once things started to fall into place I was hooked.c

I thought it was a great mystery thriller! It took me a while to get into it and figure out all the characters. A few less characters would have made this book a higher score for me and the pacing was slow. But overall when it all came together it was satisfying to figure out both mysteries of these 2 missing siblings.

Even though it has a slow start, I enjoyed the story a lot! It took me a bit to get used to the time jumps and the names, even more when they introduced new characters and I had to really pay attention before I understood who they were and their place in the story, but it was amazing. The story made me cry and smile and sometimes be so angry, the ending was very satisfying, and I'm sure I'll be thinking about the characters for a while. Really enjoyed this!

oof, this book is sad. like deep dark in the woods, generations rotting from the inside out, girls still struggling to be themselves sad.

I was riveted from the get-go and thoroughly enjoyed the plot throughout the book. I also appreciated the range of characters introduced throughout the book with one notable exception. I wish there had been more attention placed on the people of Shattock. Other than that, I thought they were are all very true to their time, place, wealth, education and upbringing.

The predictability that some lament in this book is the patriarchy. The patriarchy enacts itself in predictable ways because it works. It's not Moore's fault that patriarchal societies do what they do; her book was literally about the way the patriarchy ruined or harmed the majority of women in the book.

4.5 because the whole book was excellent, but that ending was incredibly dissatisfying. Really, why that ending, why just a sudden stop — weird weird choice! Chapter of chapter of insight into the minds of Alice, Leslie, etc. and we get a nice wrap up for Tracy, but the most important characters are not given a voice at the end…  once the culprit of the first death is exposed — Alice really needed another chapter or two and the ending for Barbara what a waste! Did Alice end up in a mental hospital completely disconnected from reality? Did she begin anew? Did Barbara ever reconcile with her mother? Did she know about Bear’s death — the truth? What were the Peters reaction upon being exposed for their deception? Maaan thus could have been another 100 pages seriously.  The author spent too long in the middle and rushed the ending and the book is poorer for it.

I hung in there for a lot of damn pages for an incredibly rushed ending when everything else took a long time for set up and execution.
