Not really a mystery/thriller but an exploration of characters, their relationships with one another, their choices and the consequences of their actions. Almost, but not quite, literary fiction?

Strong sense of place, with parts of the setting taking on a character-like quality (e.g., Self-Reliance house).

Many POVs across time. Having the timeline laid out at the top of every chapter was really helpful.

Both heartbreaking and hopeful. The message I was left with was about living authentically/on your own terms and finding "home" (love, care, belonging) outside of abusive biological family and oppressive societal norms.

"At home in her body, at home in the woods."

Sped through this in two evenings at home, both nights due to a cold and the second due to snow and ice. The different timelines was well executed. I appreciated the prominent role of the women characters.

This book is both a thrilling mystery and a chance to reminisce about childhood summers spent at camp. I was impressed by Liz Moore’s ability to weave multiple timelines and perspectives into one coherent story. I did feel that some sections could have been cut or shortened. Nevertheless, the back stories and tangents don’t interrupt the plot, but rather enhance it. Overall, this is a very good story and well worth the time it took to read it.

Hearing the hype for this, I approached with caution and ended up devouring it. What a spectacular novel from start to finish.

Crime procedurals are not always my thing, especially in book form, but class commentaries are and more than anything that is what this is. A tale of wealth and power, the forms it can take, the effect it has on its surroundings, and perhaps most importantly on its children.

Moore beautifully intertwines multiple timelines and characters and kept me guessing all the way to the very end. I hurt for Barbara and Tracy and Louise and wanted to strangle every single Peter. I attached to these characters quickly and fiercely. The story was a bit long, which is my only valid reason for docking half a star. I feel it wasn't wholly necessary but it also didn't feel like Moore was dragging it along so, who knows. Maybe it actually is a 5 star read for me.

I am glad that, to me, the hype for this one feels well deserved.

thanks, Aidan, for this recommendation.  I love reading a book where the cover and title appear to make no sense at the start, but their relevance is gradually revealed.  This was one of those.  Interesting comparisons of various types of dysfunctional families.  Kept me guessing the whole time and the ending was very satisfying.

This book had me in a chokehold however I found the first third of it to be a tad slow. Once things started to fall into place I was hooked.c

An effective and exciting mystery that probes into social hierarchy and trust. A webbed and connected world, the land is richly rendered and the people are created with a deep sense of naturalism.
