The writing of this book absolutely sucked me in and kept me there, all the way until the end. Everything was meticulously engineered. I really enjoyed this one.

Until the last 30 minutes of the book, I intended to review this with 4.5 stars. I issue a 5 star review very conservatively.
The book is well written, with balanced prose that is neither too sparse or too complex. There is an interesting and wide cast of characters and the scope of the story is expansive. This is a book that requires your focus and attention, and it would be easy to loose track of who's who.
While I was able to predict most of the twists in this story, primarily who was responsible for Bear's disappearance, watching the tragedy unfold was emotionally satisfying enough to still give those twists impact.
The very end of the book is what bumps this up to a 5 star review for me. There is a clear feminist tone throughout the book, most of what happens involves women being indirectly or directly harmed. Practically every woman in the book is a victim in some sense to a man.
at the end of the book, revealing that Barbara Van Laar was not actually another victim of the men in this story, but was removed from the men in her life by her loving mother figure, TJ, to a remote island where she can live in peace until she turns 18, was an unexpectedly uplifting final twist in such a heavy and tragic story. Watching Judy figure out the mystery, affirming her confidence in her own abilities which have been wavering throughout the story, but choosing to leave Barbara in peace at the expense of her own career advancement, was a super satisfying ending that subverted the expectations I had for a pretty standard procedural mystery

This book is about a wealthy family who owns a summer camp for wealthy kids. It has a lot of characters to get used to, but really has great, but sad twists to it. Hang in there because it is slow to start.
