The Bridge of Beyond is a multigenerational family saga centred on four generations of Black women on the island of Guadeloupe, although the focus is mostly with Telumee. The legacy of slavery, the bonds between women even if fractured, the hardships, but also acceptance and endurance, joy and love were strong themes. The way knowledge was passed between generations of women, and the way this helped them survive and live with dignity despite the challenges they faced was a highlight. I also loved the way this book really appealed to all the senses when depicting the setting. The natural environment, the plants and animals, were lovingly described and valued, something I appreciated. The final words were perfection, beautifully encapsulating the tone of the story.

“Sun risen, sun set, the days slip past and the sand blown by the wind will engulf my boat. But I shall die here, where I am, standing in my little garden. What happiness! “
