When I read McConaghy's debut Migrations, I was bowled over at the evocative language, the way she made nature spring off the page and made me cry about Arctic Terns. So I kinda knew what I was going into with this second book, but it still got me right in the feels.

Inti Flynn (what a name!) is in Scotland with her team in a effort to re-wild the country by re-introducing wolves. She faces major backlash from the mane farmers in the area, but she is also pressed on the home front, where her traumatised sister Aggie isn't leaving the house, nor speaking. When a man disappears, blame is directed towards the wolves Inti loves, and she is pushed to do things she probably shouldn't on order to protect them.

This story has it all: great characters who gets under your skin, tangled and complicated relationships, the most beautiful nature writing, and of course the wolves. For better and for worse.

Definitely an auto-buy author for me!

I liked that the main female characters were strong and could take care of themselves. The descriptions of the wolves and the Scottish Highlands were well done. It felt like I was actually observing them.
I could not suspend my disbelief when it came to the Chief of Police because of how he was described.
With all mysteries, you know that there is a twist coming but this one was a total surprise.

3.5 stars. This read like a Gothic novel, there was a dark, tense atmosphere throughout. The characters were morally grey in a believable way and the decor was set really well. I actually liked how it showed women who lived with traumas and how that changed their perspective of men as a whole, it was interesting to see the other side to that for a change. I liked the conversations about rewilding projects too. So overall this was an enjoyable read. It simply didn’t blow me away.

I'm going to start by saying I loved this book. It was engrossing and written beautifully, probably one of my favorites I've read recently.

it's hard to figure out how I feel about Inti. I find some of the things she says to be naive and, like one character even tells her, borderline eco-fascist (which feels like a bit too strong of a word, but I'm not sure how else to describe it). The ending was incredibly unexpected and I'm not sure how I felt about it, and the violence seemed gratuitous and hard to read at times. but this book was gripping, and despite thinking it was corny at times I ultimately can't help but love it.
