Loved getting lost in this story, towards the end it was a little over the top but also devastating. Not a perfect read for me but it’s been a while since I got so sucked into a book :) If you’re triggered by domestic violence maybe pick a different read, it’s as much at the core of the story as the wolves are.

There are many themes in this book which makes for a very complex story. In the first 2/3 of the book they are integrated almost seamlessly and it feels like a very absorbing, quick read. However, when it came to pulling together everything towards an ending, the story got a bit lost. There are many serious themes that might be triggering to readers, and these might not have been resolved healthily or in a way that adds to the conversation or experience of the reader. At best this leads to a frustrating read and at worst, it promotes dangerous ideas rather than seeking to heal from them.

Disclaimer: I read this book in Swedish which is not my native language, so I may have missed some nuances.
I came to this book for the themes of rewilding. I therefore really enjoyed the first ~third of the book and felt like I learned about wolves and the challenges of re-introducing a species. That's great when I was also invested in the characters, who are that interesting mix of not lovable, but not hateable either.
However, as the book goes on it becomes more of a murder mystery, which isn't really my thing. It lost focus on the wolves and by the end, the messaging about the wolves was irritatingly fanciful. It also had some deeply upsetting themes, narratives and scenes on domestic abuse that were sensitively done, but certainly not what I expected from a book that is sold as a book about the challenges of rewilding!
The handling of the theme "who is it that's really wild and dangerous - wolves or humans?" felt a little clumsy at times, but perhaps if you're new to this sort of topic it is a bit more eye-opening (I have a master's in environmental humanities, so I was reading with quite a critical eye!).

Summary: I was hoping to recommend this book to a friend who's interested in conservation and wrote their thesis on wolves, but I'm hesitating due to its deviation from that theme. But that's not to say it's a bad book if you're looking for a thematically challenging novel.
