Very different than anything I've ever read. Probably more like a 3.5. The research for this novel was outstanding. I'm not sure if it was the length or that the different parts didn't really synch up, but something was missing.

I had a really hard time with this one. I struggled with the first half of the book and the more I got into it, the more I struggled. I couldn't figure out if the voices Cady heard were ghosts or hallucinations, and even after the details of Eric's advisor's deception were revealed, I still wasn't sure (and not in a good way). Perhaps that was the intention - so that we were as unsure as Cady was? There were just so many details that were added in to mold the story, but overly-complicated it (Nico, Lee, the coordinates, the professor's attempted murder of Cady, Cady's mom being at Eric's apartment). It was just a lot. I listened to this as an audiobook; maybe I would have had a better experience if I read it.
*I read this as part of the 2021 Popsugar Reading Challenge - "A dark academia book (I think~)"

Cady's live was forever changed when her brother committed suicide by jumping out of his dorm window at Harvard. Having been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, Eric had become increasingly strange and paranoid during his final year at school. When Cady receives her own acceptance letter to Harvard, she is compelled to accept - even though her mother is against it.
Cady arrives on campus with the hope of learning what happened to her brother .... she did not expect to start hearing voices herself. Are the voices real or is Cady developing schizophrenia herself?
The book was interesting, but an average read.

Overall this was a fascinating read and a rather quick one, despite being 448 pages. I think it did need a bit of a stronger editing hand - there were times when I just wanted to be shown, not told what was going on, and the ending was both rushed and dragged on. However, I loved wondering what was happening throughout - was Cady hearing voices as a symptom of the same paranoid schizophrenia her brother endured, or were they really ghosts?

Maybe a 3.5 — this book was interesting, and I enjoyed reading it for the most part, but I don’t know if I actually liked it as a whole. The end was certainly a twist, but I don’t know how believable it was. I also think it could have been a little shorter and just as good, if not better.

Well written with unique plot elements. I really enjoyed this one, but felt that more editing could have been done in terms of length, especially at the end. Trigger warnings for suicide.

3.25 not at all what I was expecting so it wasn't quite the spooky season book I hoped it would be. I'm still not sure about the ghosts correlation with the rest of the story, it was a cool idea but just faded away to no purpose.
