I got this off my wishlist for Christmas and it was a delightful way to start off my new year. I'm actively thinking of ways to add more happiness into my life, and this book gave me some great things to think about. I've already added battery-powered lights to a dragon sculpture in my kitchen and am looking into stick-on tiles for the headboard in my bedroom. More color and fun and joy for 2019!

I tend to not notice my surroundings as much as others. I am a very person centric person. I remember the person and not what he or she was wearing. This book gave me insight to notice my surroundings and key to finding joy in the background of my everyday. There are a little quotes I will remember from this book: wear bright colors, polka dots and circles are fun, decluttering is like weeding a garden.

Browsed the last piece and took it back to the library - I did get a lot out of what I did read and I may pick it up again at a later date. The big idea was that the objects and design of our physical spaces can help us be more joyful - and what it is about them that typically brings us joy.

What a difficult book to rate.
The first chapter, on the use of colour, was spectacular - honestly, it has in what I suppose is a minor way, changed my life. Maybe it will turn out to be not so minor. I will be looking at colour and my use of colours far more closely, with more intention and that's a good thing. So chapter 1? Definitely a 5.
But the other chapters just didn't speak to me. I know I'm being too literal in thinking I'm not going to start filling one of my kitchen drawers with confetti (as she describes in one chapter), but the remaining chapters of the book simply didn't resonate for me. I skimmed through them, half-heartedly and didn't make it all the way through. I probably left half of the last chapter unread.
It was a library book which is great. Much as I liked the first chapter, I would have felt a bit ripped off if I'd bought the book.

Sadly, for a book about joy, I was finding this incredibly tedious to get through and finally half skimmed/gave up. Not sure why, as I think the concept is very good, and a few of the early examples were interesting.
Perhaps I will try it again later…
